Lead Young

Lead Young

“I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.” (Jeremiah 2:2 ESV)

Although the scriptures call us toward spiritual maturity (1 Cor 13:11; 2 Tim 2:22; 1 Pet 2:2; Heb 6:11), we must also firmly hold onto some valuable things from our youth.

Our key verse is a sober reminder not to lose our youthful sensitivity to the Lord, to be willing to follow wherever He leads, even if into dry and difficult places.

We should often reflect back on the first days of our new found salvation in Christ. Everything was fresh and exciting, and our hearts were soft and surrendered.

Sincere joy filled our lives. We anticipated amazing adventures ahead. We possessed a genuine faith and an elevated sense of desire to obey God no matter the cost.

We can’t allow ourselves to become seared from past, painful seasons nor settled in our traditions and preferences. The older we get, the softer we must become.

We cannot afford to retire our humility. Although our experience is rich with wisdom and deep in encounters, it is only through humility that we obtain favor from the Lord.

“He gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (James 4:6 NIV)

As we age, we don’t need less grace, we need it MORE than ever. After all, God still resists a prideful heart and a haughty look regardless of our age or experience.

I believe it is possible to keep leading young (Isaiah 40:31). Older leaders can sill maintain a youthful heart and a positive outlook toward the next generation.

Truth is, older leaders help younger leaders move a little slower and younger leaders help older leaders move faster. We need their energy and they need our wisdom.

So, in every season, ask God to fill you with a fresh passion and devotion to serve Him and pursue His will. This will keep you relevant, useful, and joyful in leadership.
